Family Legal Services

Whether or not you are legally married, spouses and children have certain rights in Ontario under the Family Law Act, the Children’s Law Reform Act and the federal Divorce Act.

Information about and access to legal services is necessary when dealing with family issues such as custody and parenting of children, dividing up family property and support payments for both children and spouses.

If you don’t have a lawyer, Legal Aid Ontario provides many services for family matters including:
  • Family Law Information Centres
  • Family Law Information Program
  • Duty counsel representation in court (for low income earners)
  • Summary legal advice – up to 20 minutes available through Legal Aid’s toll free number
Low income earners may also qualify for full legal representation by a lawyer who accepts their certificates.
